About Ham Radio
Written By: Shane Worth

Amateur Radio is a noncommercial service utilizing two-way radio communication. Messages are sent via voice or as International Morse Code.

The interest in Amateur Radio "Ham Radio" arose around 1901 after Guglielmo Marconi successfully sent the first transatlantic wireless telegraph signals. Around 1911, the interference of Amateur Radio with commercial and military transmissions led to government control, better known today as the FCC Federal Communication Commission.

After World War I, Amateurs were highly active in radio experimentation which has led to other inventions that we use today. Contributing to developing long-distance shortwave broadcasting. Amateur operators were the first to successfully use the upper medium frequency and lower high-frequency radio bands. For many years, amateur radio operators have provided emergency communication during forest fires, floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. They serve as an important link between communities of disasters and the outside world until normal communications are reestablished.
